For the first few days, the newborn baby may actually have green poop, which is nothing but a green sticky substance called meconium. This is quite normal and there is nothing to worry about. It is just a matter of days before one starts seeing the baby's poop becoming brown. However, breastfeeding a baby frequently can also be responsible for green defecation.
Adding prenatal vitamins in the diet can also lead to defecation of green poop during pregnancy. The best prenatal vitamins during pregnancy are often recommended to ensure proper fetal development. Basically, these are supplements that contain greater amount of essential minerals like calcium and iron as compared to other vitamins. Considering the increased nutrient needs of the body during pregnancy, a healthy diet alone may not serve the purpose. Hence, a well-balanced diet coupled with intake of prenatal vitamins ensures sufficient supply of minerals and vitamins.
Frequent passing of yellow stool may be a sign of medical condition. People diagnosed with acid reflux disease (GERD) often experience yellow-color stool. It is observed that when food particles pass through the digestive tract rapidly, thus, resulting in decreased absorption of useful nutrients. Other possible causes for yellow stool are bacterial infection and low amount of bile in stool.
It is essential to consume at least 10 to 12 glasses of water on a daily basis. Drinking warm or hot water also helps in getting rid of constipation.
