► The color and the subsequent consistency of stools depends on various factors. While white or black stools could pose to be a cause of concern, green stool should not be a cause of much turmoil, if you notice it once in a while. This could be due to the medication one is on, or may also be due to a diet full of green leafy vegetables, that leads to a green-colored excreta.◄
Infants are least likely to become constipated, as they are mostly breastfed or formula fed. Breast milk is easily digested by babies, thereby resulting in soft stools. Same can be said about babies, who are fed on iron-based baby formula. It is not unusual for breastfed babies to have only one bowel movement a week or two, and the baby cannot be called constipated in spite of having irregular bowel movements. In that case, you should check the consistency of the stool. If your baby has soft stools, then you have nothing to worry about, no matter even if your baby groans while passing stool. Milk of magnesia is a safe stool softener for infants and babies below two years of age. However, you might have to disguise it in juice or water, as it has a chalky taste, which might not go down well with fussy babies. Maltsupex is another stool softener that can be safely administered as a cure for infant constipation. You can find this medicine in any health food store or even in certain feed and grain stores.
Now comes the next 'important' change that will have to be done to your lifestyle. Along with the food habits, you will have to incorporate some form of physical activity in your daily routine. It can be walking exercise, swimming, yoga, aerobics or any other. However, make sure you consume sufficient quantities of water after you workout.
Taking stool softeners during pregnancy is considered to be safe. The active ingredients in the stool softeners are not absorbed by the body, unless it is taken in large dosages. Therefore, it does not have an adverse effect on the growing baby. However, it is important that stool softeners be taken after consulting your health care professional. Same is the case with taking any other kind of laxatives. The health care professional will take your health into consideration, before recommending a stool softener or any other laxative to you.
