I know that water is not food, but it can help in softening stool as well. It is recommended that you drink at least 2 liters or slightly more than eight 8 oz. glasses of water each day. Water aids in digesting our food and softening stool too. The amount of water you need to drink each day will vary as per your geographic location. If you are living in a more dry, warm area, then you should drink more water.
If your child goes on for days without having a single bowel movement, he might be constipated. In this case as well, the nature of the stool plays an important part in identifying if your child is constipated or not. Constipated children usually pass large, hard stools, which cause a lot of pain to them. As a result, the child avoids bowel movement, since he associates it with pain. This leads to the pile up of waste materials in the body and aggravates the problem of chronic constipation in children. Stool softeners can be used to eliminate the problem of constipation in children. Polyethylene glycol 3350 is often prescribed by pediatricians for children with constipation, since it can be tolerated well by all kids. This is an odorless and colorless powder, which can be mixed with water. Docusate, Senokot, Bisacodyl, etc., are some of the stimulant laxatives, which can be safely administered for children. Metamucil is a good stool softener for toddlers in the age group of 2 to 5. Although, corn syrup is widely used as a natural stool softener, its use for children is not recommended due to certain risks associated with it.
It is said that a diet that a pregnant woman follows, influences the color of bowel movement. During pregnancy, doctors often advice women to follow a healthy diet. Having nutritious meals during pregnancy greatly reduces the risk of birth defects in babies. It is very important that a pregnant woman gets adequate vitamins and minerals for a healthy delivery. Pregnant women tend to eat green leafy vegetables like spinach and broccoli as they are jam-packed with essential nutrients. The chlorophyll (green pigment) present in these vegetables is the one that mixes with the fecal matter, causing green bowel movement. In simple words, excess consumption of green veggies is bound to change the stool color, which is usually green.
